New Fan-Produced Syd Barrett Video

I just found this fan produced Syd Barrett video on Youtube. It’s a pretty interesting collage of well-known photos and video. One I haven’t seen before is an image of him with a small van. It looks as if he’s going to a gig and loading it.

I have recently been told that was Nick Mason in the picture.

Sure, the photos are great but lookit the prices! Mick is obviously trying to "get his" here. Christ, I can buy a first printing 1967 Pink Floyd poster for that kind o' money. Hey Mick, how do you sleep?

Take a look at these prices and gag!

$2,350.00 Framed 16 x 20
$2,500.00 20 x 24

SIX THOSAND BUCKS FOR A PHOTOGRAPH? Mick, I think that it was YOU who took too much acid in the Sixties.

As an act of protest somebody has taken Low-Res screen shots of all the photos (72), (which the SFAE has put into the public domain,) and produced a key taken from their descriptions. It can all be downloaded as one zipped file from:

Matilda Mother Alternate Lyrics

There was a boy whose name was Jim
His friends, they were very good to him
They gave him tea, and cakes and jam
And slices of delicious ham
Oh Mother tell me more

Why'd'you have to leave me there
Hanging in my infant air, waiting
You only have to read the lines of
Scribbly black and everything shines

The chief defect of Henry King
Was chewing little bits of string
At last he swallowed some which tied
Itself in ugly knots inside

Wondering and dreaming
The words have different meanings
Yes they did...

Finding she was left alone
Went tiptoe to the telephone, 999
Summoned the immediate aid
Of London's Noble Fire Brigade

For all the time spent in that room
The doll's house darkness old perfume
And fairy stories held me high
On clouds of sunlight floating by
Oh Mother tell me more
Tell me more...

Syd wrote Matilda Mother (originally titled: Snowing) around verses from Hilaire Belloc's Cautionary Tales, in which a group of misbehaving children, including Matilda, receive their (often gruesome) just deserts. Barrett was forced to rewrite and re-record the song when Belloc's estate unexpectedly refused permission to use these lyrics.

Matilda Mother Alternate, Snowing, lyrics:

There's always someone in the know
That drives that dogsled in the snow
Oh driver! I'll be bored
Why did you possess them so?
When you heard children at the door

Waiting!

You haven't heard the last of it
All locked yourself in side all that snow

As predicted in the night
ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
And I will swallow lumps of snow
Lumps and ugly dumpling pie
Oh brother! I mean more
Why did you posses them so
When you heard children at the door

Waiting!

So how'd you think you'd think you'd feel
All locked yourself inside all that snow

Final, Matilda Mother, lyrics:

There was a king who ruled the land
His majesty was in command
With silver eyes the scarlet eagle
Showers silver on the people
Oh Mother, tell me more

Why'd'ya have to leave me there
Hanging in my infant air
Waiting
You only have to read the lines
They're scribbly black and everything shines

Across the stream with wooden shoes
With bells to tell the king the news
A thousand misty riders climb up
Higher once upon a time

Wandering and dreaming
The words have different meaning
Yes they did

For all the time spent in that room
The doll's house, darkness, old perfume
And fairy sories held me high on
Clouds of sunlight floating by
Oh Mother, tell me more
Tell me more

Pink Floyd new 'EMI Manchester Sq, London' Photo

I've never seen this photo before, the Floyd in all their psychedelic refinery at EMI's offices in Manchester Square. We already have a huge collection of them here taken by Dezo Hoffmann but these, due to the different clothes, were obviously taken on a different day. Nick & Rick are wearing the same jackets they wore on the 'Piper..' cover.

ESCAPE ARTISTS PRESENTS: INTERSTELLAR FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE SYD BARRETT FUND

Tuesday July 13

Featuring Skinbat Scramble, All Schools Are Strange and Department S, plus DJ sets from Spencer Kelly

The memory of rock icon Syd Barrett is to be celebrated in London this July.

On Tuesday July 13, 93 Feet East will host ‘Interstellar’, a night for the benefit of the Syd Barrett Fund.

This event is part of the Syd Barrett Fund’s activity to mark forty years since Syd’s debut solo album was released, and follows a gig at the Tunbridge Wells Forum in June and a charity walk from London to Cambridge over Easter.

The Syd Barrett Fund was set up by Syd’s sister Rosemary Breen following his death in 2006. The fund exists to support the work of Escape Artists, a socially inclusive arts charity, based in Cambridge and London.

Interstellar will be opened by ‘Skinbat Scramble’, as they unleash a post punk, psychedelic wall of sound to get the night underway. Forming in the late 1970s as a prog goth electro psychedelic band from the Punk Scene of Medway and London, The Skinbats have seen numerous line-up changes; the current collective includes Karl Gent once of Mumm-Ra. Front man Mark Eason is a captivating performer, reciting his lyrics in a confrontational poetic style over experimental sounds and melodies provided by the guitar, bass and keys. www.skinbatscramble.co.uk

Next are ‘All Schools Are Strange’ who formed in 1982. Their music spans over many genres with hooky riffs and experimental lyrics. The band set up their own record label ‘Strange Music’ and released their first album ‘Beyond the Door’ in 1996. They have been described by the BBC as ‘having the song writing adventures of Rush and the panache of T. Rex.’ All Schools appeared at Camden’s Bolantine Bop in February 2010, an event which attracted fans from across the UK, the US, Germany, Sweden and Italy. Following Interstellar the band will head to the world-famous Edinburgh Festival this August.

Last but not least are reformed Post Punk/New Wave band Department S. Formed in 1980, evolving from Punk/Ska outfit Guns for Hire, Department S’s early career saw them enjoy success with the RCA released ‘Is Vic There’, which gained them a spot on ‘Top of the Pops’. The band also secured the Holy Grail of a Peel Session in 1980 and a number 1 hit in Spain. Splitting in 1982, the band reformed in 2007 and sold out the 100 Club early in 2010. Massive Barrett fans, Department S are writing a song for inclusion on their forth coming album about Syd, and are sure to bring ‘Interstellar’ at 93 Feet East to a memorable climax. www.myspace.com/departments

In between the bands, DJ Spencer Rocks will provide a soundtrack of 60s Garage, Psych and Punk tunes. Beginning his DJing career in 1994, Spencer has appeared at The Monarch, Laurel Tree, Forum, Astoria and as a guest at Blow Up. For five years he was a resident at the Time Tunnel (upstairs at The Wag on Wardour Street) and now plays the monthly charity event Unplanned Afternoons at the Alwhin in Islington. This won’t be Rocks’ first Syd event, having helped organise a Barrett tribute at The Social in 2006.

Event organizer Simon Webb says of the line up:

“All three bands have existed in one form or another since the late seventies or early eighties, with differing success levels along the way. All three now have the enjoyment of simply playing in front of an audience as their main goal in music, something which is very important for an event in the spirit of Syd Barrett, since it was the fun Syd got from music which was most important to him, rather than any success, fame or aclaim.”

Expect energetic performances, psychedelic noise and perhaps a few cover versions of Syd’s inspirational work, that said, it wouldn’t be a tribute to Syd Barrett if we knew exactly what was going to happen.

Tickets are £5, and can be bought here:

As well as on the night, also £5.
