THE GENIUS NEXT DOOR

His screaming could start at any time of night or day but it often seemed to begin just as I was going to bed. There would be thuds and crashes from next door as furniture was destroyed and an incessant howling, more animal-like than human. This could last for two hours and, as a young child, it terrified me. It was usually just incoherent, angry shrieking but very occasionally words could be distinguished. They were always the same: ‘F****** Roger Waters! I’m going to f****** kill him.’

It wasn’t much fun, having Syd Barrett as a neighbour. Of course, I didn’t know who he was at the time. It was only later that I realised he was a rock legend, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd, who had numbered Paul McCartney, David Bowie and Pete Townshend among his fans. Recently, it was revealed Syd, who died in July, left £1.2million in his will. He was the songwriting genius behind much of Floyd’s early material, including hit singles See Emily Play and Arnold Layne, but his increasingly bizarre behaviour led to him parting company with the band in 1968, soon after the release of their first album. Pink Floyd – with Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Nick Mason and Syd’s replacement, David Gilmour – went on to become one of the most successful rock acts ever. Syd’s career petered out after a couple of solo albums.

Then he moved in next door to me. I lived with my family at No7 St Margaret’s Square in Cambridge. It was a quiet cul- de- sac of Thirties semidetached houses. Winifred, Syd’s mother, was next door at No6 and in 1981, when I was six, her son returned from London to live with her. The first time I saw him, I was playing on my bike in our driveway. He came out of his house with some garden shears and a saw, a nondescript man in his mid-30s with thinning hair. Wordlessly he set about chopping down the trees and bushes in his front garden. The garden had been beautiful – the previous owners of the house had worked at Cambridge University Botanic Garden – but it looked as if it had been ravaged by a tornado when Syd had finished.

He cut up all the tree trunks, lugged them into his back garden and burnt them on a huge bonfire. My parents were very upset, but there was nothing they could do. We had no idea this was the beginning of a pattern that would be repeated again and again. Every time the bushes grew back, Syd hacked them down and burnt them. He also periodically smashed and burnt his ‘artwork’ – psychedelic paintings, vaguely reminiscent of Jackson Pollock. The bonfires were huge, with flames seven or eight feet high, sending a fog of thick white smoke over the whole street. Syd’s mum, who was friendly with my parents, was always apologetic but she could do nothing to control him.

And we soon learnt it was pointless remonstrating with Syd himself. Any attempt to tackle him over his behaviour would be met, at best, with a blank stare. Sometimes he would unleash a torrent of foul-mouthed and frightening abuse. When Syd was in one of his burning moods, all we
could do was retreat into the house and shut all the doors and windows. Syd didn’t really do consideration. But the bonfires were the least of our worries. The peace was frequently shattered by the sound of breaking glass. Whenever the inner demons that tormented Syd got the better of him, he’d hurl things through his windows. This happened at least 100 times.

His lawn was often littered with broken glass, mugs, saucepans and ornaments. Sometimes the window-breaking started in the middle of the night and I would lie in bed too scared to go back to sleep in case he started attacking our house. I was convinced that one day he would run out of his own windows and start on ours. Occasionally a window was fixed and then smashed again the next day. Syd single-handedly kept some of the local glazing firms in business.

But the screaming fits were by far the most disturbing aspect of his behaviour. To hear a grown man wailing and screeching for hours at a time was terrifying for me and my two sisters. We had no understanding of mental illness. As far as we were concerned, we lived next door to an unhinged and possibly dangerous lunatic. Our worst fears were confirmed one night when Syd was taken away in a straitjacket. We had called the police before on a couple of occasions. They would come round and have a word with Syd’s mum and leave without taking any further action.

But on this occasion his outburst had been particularly violent and we later discovered he had attacked his mother. She had called the police. I recall peering out the window and seeing Syd being led away in restraints. His mum was very upset and was pleading with him to calm down but he was spitting out a load of abuse. I hoped he would never come back. But he did come back a few days later and his mother moved out to stay with her daughter, Rosemary. She couldn’t handle Syd any more. After that, Rosemary looked after him. She took him shopping to Sainsbury’s each week. The store was ten minutes away.

She would pick him up, drive him there and walk him round the aisles, as if he were a child, then drive him back again. He would sit in the car until Rosemary opened the door for him and guided him back into the house. He looked as if he didn’t really know where he was or what was going on. With his mother gone, his behaviour continued much the same as before. Our family operated as an early-warning system, ringing his sister when he got out of hand. She’d come round and smooth things over.

It has been said Syd took little interest in Pink Floyd after leaving the band, yet the bonfires and window-breaking peaked in 1986 when Floyd were in the news because of a legal dispute between Waters and the other members. It may have been a coincidence, but Syd seemed to
blame Waters for something – it was only ever his name that featured in his screamed threats. I used to worry about how we’d protect ourselves if he went berserk and attacked us. Syd reminded me of Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

Over the years, he never said more than a few words to me at a time. If we passed in the street, he would occasionally manage a mumbled ‘Hello’ but more often than not he would simply hurry past, head down. Sometimes he even crossed the road to avoid me. A fairly steady stream of fans came to pay homage. They often knocked on our door. ‘Does Syd Barrett live there?’ We would tell them he didn’t. We knew he didn’t want to be disturbed and that, if he was, it might ‘send him off on one’.

Fans sometimes wouldn’t take no for an answer and would go and hammer on his door. Usually there would be no response, but occasionally he did open the door, presumably by mistake. He would slam it in their faces as soon as he realised who they were. He physically deteriorated
after his mother’s departure. He wouldn’t bother buttoning up his shirt, if he bothered wearing one at all. He wore trousers that were way too big for him. He looked disheveled. We sometimes saw him walking down the road wearing only his pyjama bottoms.

He seemed to live on fry-ups and frequently set his frying pan on fire. We would see the flames leaping up to the ceiling in his kitchen but there would be no sign of Syd. He had a very relaxed approach to fire safety. He drank heavily, probably getting through a bottle of whiskey a day. Syd was also an enthusiastic smoker. As a teenager I worked in the local newsagent. Syd came in almost every day for his cigarettes. He always bought 60 and sometimes purchased tobacco and snuff as well. He would buy a different selection every time, asking for ‘ 20 Rothmans, 20 B&H, 20 Embassy Number 1’, or ‘ 20 JPS, 20 Embassy Regal, 20 Marlboro’. He’d take the cigarettes and march off without another word. He never handed over cash but ran up large bills on a tab that his sister used to settle. By then, I knew who he was and found it hard to reconcile this middle aged recluse, who had huge problems engaging with the world, with the good-looking musician I saw smiling out of early photographs.

How could the author of poetic lyrics rich in surreal imagery be reduced to someone who could barely string a sentence together? I had read enough to know most critics ascribed his problems to an LSD-induced breakdown at the height of his fame. Syd was a dire warning about the dangers of drugs. On one occasion he came into the shop when a music magazine had a picture of Syd-era Pink Floyd on the front.

I said to Roger – his real name, Syd was a nickname – ‘You’re on the cover of Mojo today, Roger.’ He looked surprised. ‘I’ll have that,’ he said. I got the impression that he was pleased. In the 25 years he lived in St Margaret’s Square, I only ever once saw him smile. It was in the Nineties when I owned a Lancia Delta HF Turbo – a replica of the rally car that Martini had sponsored in the Eighties. I was very proud of it and one day I was washing it, holding a hose over the roof so that the water cascaded down the sides. Syd came into his garden and stood beaming at me with a huge grin on his face. He wasn’t known as a motor enthusiast – the only ‘vehicle’ he owned was a battered old bicycle. I believe the scene tickled him because he thought that I was watering my car, as if it were a plant. Perhaps it took him back to his acid drenched hippy days.

But it wasn’t all bad. When he wasn’t having one of his attacks, he was pretty quiet. I never heard his television. I heard him playing music only a handful of times – and always classical or modern jazz, never pop or any of his own work.

In his later years his behaviour became less erratic and the screaming stopped altogether. There was still the occasional bonfire. We even got a couple of Christmas cards from him. He’d made them himself, beautifully drawn Christmas designs – bells and holly on white card. ‘Have a very Happy Christmas, from Roger,’ the message said. One year, when I saw in the newspaper that it was his birthday, I stuck a card through his letterbox. The next time I saw him he said ‘Hello’ and held my gaze for a couple of seconds. He seemed to be thanking me. I’d long since ceased to fear him. I knew he was a deeply troubled soul, deserving of sympathy more than anything else.

Syd died at home in July of complications arising from diabetes. He was 60 and had been in Addenbrooke’s Hospital for about three weeks beforehand. His sister had told us that when he came home he would have to have a live-in carer. He had been home for just a day and a half
when he passed away. His house was recently sold and I went to view it when it was on the market. The colour scheme was best described as interesting – one room is orange, one blue, several are a combination of orange, blue and pink – and the kitchen is testament to Syd’s
unsuccessful adventures in DIY: a hotchpotch of flimsy, oddly shaped shelves. One image haunts me. A toy hippo was nailed to one of the door handles. This was typical Syd: inscrutable, bizarre and slightly, well, mad. I’m sorry he’s dead – but I won’t miss him.

Now, wouldn't it be nice to obtain a Syd Barrett haul like this? And... Make no mistake; I am certain such a haul is out there. Like the Compleat UFO Recordings or Syd doing demos for Madcap Laughs.

See... the unfortunate thing that happened with Syd Barrett is that everybody is convinced that he was some sort of genius. Therefore, they are HOLDING ON to all of their tapes for the day where they can MAKE A MILLION BUCKS off of them.

Really? Nobody gives a shit. Syd Barrett is fringe material and now he's OLD FRINGE MATERIAL. The average Pink Floyd listener wasn't even born when he was playing with Pink Floyd. Their favorite album is The Wall. They think Igor Waters is a genius. They could give a fuck about Syd Barrett; if they even knew who he was.

So... those tapes you're holding? You're not going to MAKE A MILLION BUCKS from them. You ought to just rip 'em and throw 'em up on torrent or find some independent label that will have you. Or contact me; I have a team that can help you.

Unfortunately, this exact same thing has happened with the 13th Floor Elevators. People are holding tapes waiting for the day where they MAKE A MILLION BUCKS from them. Really? Nobody gives a shit that they were the very first psychedelic rock band. Nobody gives a shit that they were so special. It's all old news now. For those holding 'Elevators tapes see the above paragraph.

Roky Erickson? People recorded a LOT of his material. The tapes were spinning when he played; they still are. With Roky, key people are realizing that they will not, or they were never interested in, MAKING A MILLION BUCKS. So... some are blowing it out.

This deal in Amsterdam? I find it grotesque. The “original” tape player? Mannequins up on stage? Mannequins? Then this guy gets to fill his hall a few times. What happened to the story that the owner of this tape signed a Release to record the band? This Release precluded him from using the recording. What? All-of-the-sudden this just evaporates?

Look, I hope the Pink Floyd Amsterdam tapes comes out but, this is bullshit. Am I the only one who smells a rat here?

ROOTS OF CAMBRIDGE ROCK 1960s REUNION - 30 OCTOBER 2010

The Roots of Cambridge Rock Reunion musical event held at St Paul's Church in Hills Road raised £1116 for charity through ticket sales and a collection held on the night.

Three charities were chosen to receive cheques for £372 each at a presentation in St Paul's on 8 December: Parkinson's UK, Alzheimer's Society and the Syd Barrett Fund.

Rock Poster Scammer Alert - horridious-2009

I would like to take this opportunity to warn all collectors of fine psychedelic poster art about this eBay scammer going by the handle: horridious-2009. Here is their eBay Account Page: http://myworld.ebay.com/horridious-2009.

All of you readers know who I am; you know that I have been in this game for many years and that I collect fine psychedelic poster art. You all know that I know my shit.

Recently I bought two Moby Grape psychedelic posters from this seller that have turned out to be cheap counterfeits. What this seller does is display a picture of an authentic psychedelic poster that shows visible aging and wear. They then use language to describe their counterfeit item as genuine; stuff like: “stored rolled” – what? Stored for about as long as it took you to jam it into the mailing tube after you ran it off?, “no pin holes” uhhhh, yeah, no pinholes, the poster was just ran off. “no bends”, etc…

Then this seller takes your money and delivers garbage to you. In my case, I paid over $160.00 for two fake posters that are mere scans of originals run off on some expensive printer. These things even came in shrink wrap! These thieves have no shame.

As you all know, original 1960’s posters were produced utilizing old technology; 3-color, or 4-color, offset printing. There’s a particular type of stock that was used and this stock shows the effects of over 40 years of time passing.

What I received for my money was computer printouts of scanned images on brand new glossy computer paper.

I'll let you readers see for yourselves. You really have to see it to believe it, this scammer is so blatant.
  • OK, the first two images displayed on this blog post (at the top) are the images that this scammer chooses to display as pictures of what the product looks like with their eBay auction. As you can see, they acquired images of the authentic posters somewhere. You can see the 40+ years accumulated upon these posters in the images that this scammer displays as what the Bidder is bidding upon.

  • Now, the three images below are what this scammer actually delivers to you when you "win" the auction. I left one of the posters unopened. As you can see, they are rolled TIGHT and sealed in plastic! That's because they are brand new counterfeit posters. Look at the other picture, you can see the glare of the light shining on the brand-new, glossy, computer printer stock.

  • The third picture is of the tube that this scammer ships these items in. I have a soda can next to it for frame of reference. As you can see, the tube is a cheap one and so tiny and this scammer jams both posters down inside it.

At first, I contacted this scammer privately and told them that I was on to their game. I offered to just let them refund my money and I would not say anything. I did not offer to return the posters as they are not worth the paper they are printed on.

I told this seller that if they did not comply with this offer that I would contact the Albuquerque Police about their little fraud operation as well as the Albuquerque Attorney General, the New Mexico Better Business Bureau, the United States Postal Inspector as well as the IRS because I really doubt that they are paying proper taxes on this fraud operation. Income Tax Fraud is how they got Al Capone and I know that they are cracking down on it.

Get this, apparently this crook is a woman and she contacted “Chad” in Security at eBay maintaining that I threatened her. I wasn’t aware that telling somebody that you would contact the proper authorities after being defrauded was a “threat”. You know what? I PROMISE that I am going to do this now. I don’t even care about the money anymore.

Tomorrow, I contact the Albuquerque Police. These scammers live there. After that it’s the Attorney General and the BBB. Then the fun stuff starts with the Postal Inspector and the IRS.

These clowns are still maintaining that their counterfeit posters are real.

Please spread the word among all our fellow poster collectors about this crew operating on eBay.

Posted this elsewhere, but might well be of interest here... thanks to Felix of
the Holy Church for making me aware of the furore. It brings (at least) three
former Barrett controversies neatly together.

Essentially, David Sore (former neighbour, and would be biographer of Syd's
latter years) is challenging Rob Chapman (biographer of Syd) to prove both who
HE is and whether Radha (former neighbour of Syd and contributor of anecdotes to
this group and Chapman's Syd bio) is real !

Here's the story:

In December 2006 The Daily Mail published a large article based on interviews
with David Sore which described life as a child growing up next to Roger (Syd)
Barrett in the 80s and 90s. The article portrayed Roger as a disturbed soul.
Quite a few Barrett fans got very agitated about this, suggesting that either
David Sore wasn't for real, or if he was, he was a bad person.

I did a bit of digging around at the time, and soon satisfied myself that David
Sore was for real. Whether he's a bad person is another matter... I suspect
there is some truth in what he has to say about being scared of Roger Barrett as
a child, but it makes uncomfortable reading which leads some Barrett fans to
reject him completely.

And he doesn't exactly help his own case! David Sore's blog 'Being A Human'
makes it clear that he hopes to make some proper money out of his story and is
quite willing to get litigious about it. He also has some extreme views about
the death penalty, drug rehabilitation, etc... and on top of that, we can now
add a healthy dose of paranoia.

David's got hold of Rob Chapman's book, which quotes another person's (Radha's)
childhood recollections of living on Roger's street. David thinks Radha's conned
Rob Chapman here, because noone of that name lived on St Margarets Square at the
appropriate time. We'll come back to that...

In the meantime, David's gone off to Keith Jordan's Neptune Pink Floyd site and
picked a row with Rob Chapman until it reaches the point where Keith bans him.
So David now believes that it's a huge conspiracy. He has discovered that both
Rob Chapman and Keith Jordan are northern englanders, and drawn the conclusion
that they are one and the same person ! Oh dear. I've never met either Rob
Chapman or Keith Jordan, but I've corresponded with both. If 'they' are 'one',
they've been doing a superb job of keeping the pretence up for years !

And so to the final controversy, Radha (or Radharani Krishna Harte to use her
full name). Chapman quotes some of Radha's Barrett anecdotes towards the end of
'A Very Irregular Head'. These are almost to good to be true, involving a
child-friendly Rog who won't be called 'Mr. Barrett' and believes in flying
horses. They are at the complete opposite of the spectrum to David Sore's
recollections, which Rob Chapman - by his own admission - has deliberately
ignored.

So Sore's accusation is that Radha's a fake, because he doesn't remember her.

Now... Radha turned up here in 2007 and attracted a lot of scepticism. She said
that she had lived in Barrett's street from 1982-1998, then this:

"I was packing to move to London the last time we spoke, and I was
completely preoccupied with remembering every last thing. He stopped at our gate
and asked if we were going on holidays, and I said "No, Rog, I'm off to London
to be rich and famous!" He half smiled and stared off into space for a long time
whilst I stuffed bags into the car. Finally he let himself into the garden and
put his arm around me. He said Cambridge'd be dull without me (at that stage I
was fairly notorious around town for being "an arty type," whatever that meant),
and we had a long talk that, knowing what I know now, really gives me the old
throat-lump. I didn't realise it at the time, but he was really giving me a lot
of himself. I think he must have done this with some of the other kids I grew up
with who left home the way he had done, with big dreams and not much experience.
I think it was his chance to be a dad."

Perfect, isn't it ? Almost too good to be true... shortly after that, Radha
disappeared from the group, made a brief reappearance a year later, then
vanished completely. (Incidentally, that's another indicator of Chapman lurking
in Barrett forums, skimming off his 'original' material !) I had forgotten about
her til Chapman's book. I was pleased - and to be honest, mildly surprised - to
discover she's for real.

Except that David Sore says she isn't. But on Page 365 of 'A Very Irregular
Head' Rog's nephew, Ian Barrett, says of the 80s: "I knew one of the girls,
Radha, who lived two doors up...".

If you want a final twist, I can quote several Sydiots over the years who have
proclaimed that Ian Barrett isn't real either. But he is - in fact, it was Ian
who put me in contact with Rob Chapman. So - now we're into a straight fight to
be the most reliable witness between Ian Barrett and David Sore.

That's 1-0 to Radha and Rob Chapman, then.

Anders Lind, one of the key figures in the Swedish progressive music movement, taped a complete show of Pink Floyd Stockholm in 1967. Apparently this, long rumored, recording will now see the light of day as a performance. Please see below:

THE PINK FLOYD HAPPENING:

September 10th 1967 Pink Floyd performed at the jazz club The Golden Circle in Stockholm.The concert was recorded with professional microphones on a Revox tape recorder.This recording is the only one existing of a complete Pink Floyd performance during theyear 1967. The recording is of the highest quality and listening to it is as close as one can get to actually having been there when it happend.

On May 3rd & 7th 2011 we once again open the doors to the Golden Circle for a reconstruction of that magic afternoon in September 1967. On the same stage at which they performed will be the same tape recorder that recorded them as well as specially designed Pink Floyd mannequins, wearing identical clothes and instruments as in 1967. We will for the first time since then experience PINK FLOYD – Live at the Golden Circle.

The phenomenal Stockholm based Pink Floyd cover band LOST IN RICK WRIGHT’S WARDROBE will perform PINK FLOYD classics from the Syd Barrett era, 1965-1968.

The Pink Floyd concert with the bands founder, Syd Barrett will be played on 3rd and 7th of May this year. It's an almost 50 minute long, previously unaired recording from September 1967 that now, for the first time will be played in front of an audience where it was recorded 43 years ago.

Last summer a new edition of Syd Barrett's (1946-2006) music was released as a box set "Crazy Diamond”. Still missing was live recordings of the early psychedelic Pink Floyd, when Barrett was still the front man. Drugs and a fragile mind made Barrett loose control of himself and the group. He was replaced that same year by David Gilmour.

Gilmour has in interview said that they have been searching for live recordings with the early Pink Floyd, but found nothing but snippets. Few Pink Floyd fans has been able to hear what the band sounded like with Barrett. But here in Sweden there is a recording from the Pink Floyd gig at Gyllene Cirkeln. The concert date was the day before the debut album ”Piper at the gates of dawn” was released in the US.

It was a famous Swedish sound engineer that recorded Pink Floyd on his Revox recorder. He wants to remain anonymous for the time being to avoid being contacted by the groups many fans and others who wants to buy the unique recording.

”It's a lucky coincidence that the Gyllene Cirkelns new owners 2 Grabbar & Kök have chosen to recreate the original interior decorations of the restaurant from the 60's. We are trying to recreate everything as it was that night when Pink Floyd played. I've managed to get mannequins that we are going to dress with exact copies of the outfits that the band wore and the mannequins are being sculpted by students at Konstfack (Fine Arts School) so that they will look like the band members.”

If possible, the opening acts that played on Cirkeln on September 10th 1967, Sleepstones with Janne Schaffer and Ted Åström, and Bamboo with Michael Rickfors will also play at the event.

The two concert dates at Gyllene Cirkeln are before and after former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters gig at The Globe on May 4th and 5th. Waters will most probably attend the event at Cirkeln on May 3rd.

Hello again

Here at last is the "review" of half the show from Stockholm 1967. I have found the notes I have of the songs. So now I'm sitting here with a dram of Bowmore...........will probably be another one before I have finish this Email.

The show took place at Gyllene Cirkeln, which lays almost in the heart of Stockholm. It's still there but now it's called just Cirkeln. It's a restaurant, then and now also. It's open for lunch these days. I have copies of two photos from this show, you can see them in
The Amazing Pudding issue 35. One is when they play, you see that people just finish eating on that picture.... The other one is for me the last group picture of Syd as a Popstar.
(if anyone of you remember our prime minster, Olof Palme, he was shot down 1986 on open street. He last walk from the cinema, was just outside Cirkeln.)

In the summer of 1967, sorry 1986 a friend of mine asked me if I was interested to join him when he should record some tracks for his groups new album. Of course did I join him, I know that their producer was the one how did tape the show in Stockholm 1967 with Pink Floyd. He also have a jam session with a Swedish group called Hansson & Carlsson (some of you might have heard Hansson first solo album The Lord of the Rings from 1970). The
session is about 4 hours and they did do it together with the one and only Jimi Hendrix !

He did tape a lot of shows from Gyllene Cirkeln, I think one reason was that Hansson & Carlsson did play there often. So he did have his equipment there all the time. So the show is probably recorded the same way as the audience recording from Amsterdam 1969. He did record the show with a Revox reel and it's on two reels. It's the first reel that I have heard two times. You can be sure that I did try to find the other reel but it was thousands of reels laying around in the studio. He though he probably had it at home.

He said that he had to sign some kind of paper before the show, to someone, probably their manager. He couldn't remember.

So after a recording day in the studio, which ended up with me producing parts of one track on my friends record. He started to mix the Pink Floyd reel in the studio. If I hadn't know it was a audience recording, it wasn't hard to think it was a soundboard recording. Unfortunately was the sound of Syd singing not good. I don't know if it was the something wrong with Syds microphone or if Syd did feel like singing properly. (remember that they
saw some swedish people just finishing there dinner......also sitting still...)

So here's what they they play:

On the last reel is another 2 tracks, one which he didn't know the other one was their famous single, See Emily Play.............as he remember it.

I did do some discussions with him if it really was See Emily Play or not. After a while he wasn't that sure anymore, it could actully been Arnold Layne instead. He was sure it was a famous single and I think it's more likely that they played Arnold Layne as they did play it in Copenhagen. If you listen to the interview with Roger from swedish radio, he isn't too happy talking about Emily.......

After a long dinner with lots of wine and happy talk, he said to us that if we wanted we could go down to the studio (downstairs) to listen to the show again. AND WE DID.

If you wonder how the show was, I can say it sounds very much same as Copenhagen (Pow R Toch as Rotterdam). I did do some listen to the Copenhagen show when I got back home and the only thing that's really different with the shows is the quality of the sound. Almost perfect.

I don't think this show will see the daylight if it's not released officially. If he could release it he would but as he is in the business and he have signed a paper he can't.

And now for something else, I answered an Email about 3rd 1967 gig recording. No one else did say something else about any other show from 1967. I started trading tapes 79/80 and since then I have heard lots of rumours of shows. Many has now seen the daylight BUT not all........

When I started trade there were no UK shows from the 60's, only the BBC stuff. The first UK show was from Croydon (70-01-18) but it was then not complete. But you could get shows from Denmark, Holland but no shows from the UK. STRANGE if you think how many shows that they did play and no tapes..... Then a friend of mind did get 35 mins of the show from The Plumton Festival 69 from someone here in Sweden who was there. Then suddenly there was a complete tape of the Plumton show available. Then did the guy find the show he had from Copenhagen (70-11-12) but again he hadn't got the whole show. And again a complete show did turn up soon after...........???????

Now some show from 1969 have turn up like London, Manchester and Southampton. While I was writing on this letter I have been listen to Chesterfield (69-03-27). When should UK shows from 1967 and 1968 turn up ?

I know that there are some people that have shows that they don't trade to anyone, only to "friends" or for other "rare" tapes or whatever they wanna call it. I know it cos I could prove it to one of the guilty once, he hasn't talk to after that............

So I have heard that Yoko Ono should have a complete show on film from 66/67, at least one other show from 66 or early 67 should exist on tape and some people in UK well known among tape traders should have a copy of it. The once who told me had probably same problem as me, we didn't have anything "rare" to trade with..... Or some may have got it as "you-can't-trade-this-then-you-wouldn't-get-any-more-from-me" BUT remember that these are only rumours and only rumours. But as we say in Sweden "you can't have smoke without a fire"

HERE IS A SHORT INTERVIEW WITH ROGER WATERS THAT TOOK PLACE ON THEIR FALL, 1967, SCANDINAVIAN TOUR:

Sept. 10, 1967 Interview
3 minute interview that took place during Pink Floyd’s 4-day Scandinavian tour

RW: Um, there’s me, I play bass, my names Roger Waters, Syd Barrett, who plays lead guitar, Rick Wright who plays organ, and Nick Mason plays the drums.
Interviewer: And you four together make The Pink Floyd. Why that certain name?
RW: Uh… No reason. You know, it’s just, uh, sounds like a nice name to us. It’s really just a registration mark. It’s better then called ourselves CCE338, or something like that.

Interviewer: Uh, when was the group formed?
RW: Um, a couple of years ago, I guess. Just playing back rooms, you know, around when we were all students.

Interviewer: All the music you’re performing with now, is original material, or is there somebody else writing it?
RW: No, it’s all stuff we’ve written ourselves. Well, most of it’s written by Syd.

Interviewer: Yes. Could you please try, at least in words, to express the kind of music that you’re performing?
RW: No.

Interviewer: You say it’s impossible, or…
RW: Yeah. Uh, it’s almost impossible to express it in music, let alone words.

Interviewer: Uh, OK, to which kind of music is it connected?
RW: Um, I don’t know. I really don’t know.

Interviewer: Ok, your first, your first record (laughs). Arnold Layne. When was that released?
RW: In England, um, three weeks ago.

Interviewer: And that’s all orignal stuff on it too, no?
RW: Yeah. Yeah.

Interviewer: Your latest single is See Emily Play. Who is Emily?
RW: Um… Uh, you know, if you can find out who she is, write us and tell us, ’cause we don’t know. She could be anyone. You know, she’s just a hung-up chick, that’s all.

Interviewer: Uh, is there any new single release planned for the near future?
RW: Well, there’s one planned, but we havn’t written the song yet.

Interviewer: Are there any future plans planned for you in the near future? Are you going to the States or something like that, or are you staying in England?
RW: Well, obviously we’d like to get to the States, ’cause, uh, there’s a lot of bread over there, but whether anyone will ask us to go is another question. You know, it really depends on the record breaking in the States. If the record breaks, you know… that’s cool. If it doesn’t, we don’t stand a chance.

New Syd jollyness!

This photo is a another shot from a photo shoot at Gyllene Cirkeln, Stockholm on the 10th Sep 67. We already have some photos from this date but this is a new one. This was 1st published on this website.

Up for auction is this Syd poem which you can view in more detail here.

"A Syd Barrett poem, circa late 60s/early 70s, signed, in black ballpoint on a small piece of paper, entitled 'A Rooftop Song In A Thunderstorm Row Missing The Point', thirteen lines, beginning, 'With yellow red and foomy food, and quivered/crouching on a golden cushion/Undressed himself to dissapear (sic) through an infinity of pleasure...', the reverse with part of a question/answer piece, one side covered in tape, 12.5 x 13cm (5 x 5in) approx.

Footnote:
This will feature in a book about Syd to be launched in March 2011, with an exhibition at Idea Generation, and the Barrett family have confirmed this is in Syd's hand. "

On the reverse is a supposed interview with Syd which, if I recall correctly, was printed in the 'Terrapin' fanzine, the handwriting of which looks very similar to that of one of the writers of that publication (as anyone who's seen the fanzine knows, most of it was handwritten!) Why would Syd write a poem on the back of an interview? Who knows. Maybe the interviewer who (obviously, if it's all real) met Syd, was given the poem by him ("Take this!.. Now p*ss off!") but then proceeded to ask Syd questions which needed writing down ASAP on the nearest piece of paper. Just a theory, and a plausible one. Also of note is that this poem was 1st published in 'Terrapin' and for years we have been wondering what the source of it was, was it real? etc. Well, according to the auction house Syd's family have confimed it's written in Syd's hand and it's being published in the upcoming 'Barrett' book. Mystery solved, partly! :) OR is someone just trying to flog a page from 'Terrapin' fanzine?
